Lansdowne new name
Lansdowne, one of the most visited hill stations, is being considered to be named ‘Kalon Danda’. But for now this new change is for the natives. Let us tell you, before the British changed the name to Lansdowne, this place was known as Kalon Danda. The Ministry of Defense (MoD) has sought information about the British era names of towns, roads etc. falling in the cantonment areas of Uttarakhand and renaming them according to the respective folk culture is being considered.

From Kalon Danda to Lansdowne –
Before Lansdowne, this place was known as Kalu (black) and Danda (hills) in Garhwali. Let us tell you, it was named after the then Viceroy of India (1888–1894), Lord Lansdowne, in 1887, and by 1901 the population was about 3943. Lansdowne was established by the British to develop a training center for the Garhwal Rifles.

Lansdowne used to be a major place of activities of freedom fighters during the British period. Now the famous Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army has its Regimental Center located here. Lansdowne is one of the quietest hill stations in India and has been quite popular since the British came to India. Lansdowne can also be reached by vehicles like other hill stations. It is situated at an altitude of 1,706 meters above sea level in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand state surrounded by dense oak and blue deodar forests.
