Aamir had asked for Rs 150 crore from Netflix
According to the report of ‘Bollywood Hungama’, this conversation between the makers of Netflix and Lal Singh Chaddha had reached an advanced level. The report claimed that Aamir Khan was asking for a huge amount of Rs 150 crore for the digital rights of his film. Now since these talks were taking place before the release of the film, the negotiations were going on. The report quoted the source as saying, ‘Aamir Khan was very excited to release the film on Netflix. This is because it is a global platform. Also it has more than 200 million subscribers. Aamir had demanded Rs 150 crore for this. The actor had full hopes that his film would earn a bumper at the box office. Along with this, there was also a deal in the deal that ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ should be released on OTT after 6 months of its release in theatres.’
China box office and 90 crore offer
While Aamir was negotiating these two terms, he also had China’s box office earnings on his mind. Aamir Khan’s films do a very strong business in China. The earnings of ‘3 Idiots’ to ‘Dangal’ and ‘Secret Superstar’ are proof of this. Thus, the negotiation period was going on. Netflix guys were ready to pay up to Rs 90 crore for ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’. But Aamir Khan was not agreeing. In the end, Aamir placed a demand of Rs 125 crore, which was very high according to Netflix. So this conversation was stopped then. Aamir was hopeful that he will do a fresh deal with Netflix when the film releases and does well at the box office.
Seeing the collection of ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’, now buyers are not getting it?
Meanwhile, ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ flopped badly at the box office. Not only this, thousands of shows of the film also had to be canceled from the second day itself. Now it is being told that in such a situation, Netflix reduced its amount to Rs 50 crore first and then later backed out of this deal. It is being claimed in the report that now Netflix is not taking any interest in ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ at all. In such a situation, now the makers of the film i.e. Aamir Khan Production and Viacom 18 are left with no other option but to release the film on Viacom’s app ‘Voot’. Now because it is an in-house OTT platform, in such a situation, earning by selling rights here is not going to be beneficial. The number of paid subscribers of Voot is said to be 1 million.
‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ to be released on two OTT apps simultaneously?
However, in the midst of all this, there is one more news. For some time now, the trend of releasing the same film on two OTT apps has also increased. For example, we can see Rajamouli’s RRR and R. Madhavan’s Rocketry. Both these films have been released simultaneously on two OTT platforms. In such a situation, it is also being said that there is talk of releasing ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ on Voot app as well as another OTT platform. Another report says that the deal is about to be finalized with this second app and ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ can get Rs 100-120 crore for this.
…then the makers of ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ will be saved from losses
The budget of ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ is being told close to Rs 140 crore. If this deal is done, then it is certain that the filmmakers will recover from the loss. The film has earned Rs 51 crore from theatres. It can earn close to Rs 60 crore at Lifetime box office. In such a situation, after digital rights, the film will definitely earn its profit by selling satellite rights to premiere on TV.
