Kohli played for the first time under Rohit’s captaincy. Rohit started his captaincy journey (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) from the first ODI of the series against West Indies. India defeated West Indies in this match held in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
In a conversation with Star Sports, Gavaskar said, ‘Why won’t they get along? He is playing for India. It is not happening between two players, such news is always speculation.
He further said, ‘According to sources or allegedly or according to reports. Nobody tells you anything and this has been going on for years. And these people (players) don’t even care about it. You should not be bothered by such speculations because you yourself know what is the truth. So actually there is no issue at all.
Gavaskar said that it cannot happen that Kohli thinks that he will not perform under Rohit’s captaincy.
He further said, ‘Sometimes it is said that a player who was the captain earlier, does not want to see the new captain succeed. This is stupid. Since if he doesn’t score runs or bowler doesn’t take wickets, he will be out of the team.
Gavaskar said, ‘He has lost the captaincy or he has decided to step down from the captaincy, if now you do not perform well with bat or ball then you will be out of the team. So this kind of talk is only a speculation of people who don’t have anything better to do and make up such stories.’
Gavaskar said, ‘Kohli will score runs whether he is playing under Rohit’s captaincy or someone else’s. He will score runs for India. India have taken a 1-0 lead in the ODI series. The second match of the series will be played on Wednesday.
