new Delhi . Indian cricket has been dealt a severe blow during 2022 with injuries to several of its regular players across all formats.
BCCI really needs to address the challenge of such frequent absence of cricketers despite having a workload management process in place. Several cricket events including the ODI World Cup are coming together in 2023.
Deepak Chahar and Washington Sundar have spent much of this year resting and rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Chahar’s first injury of 2022 was to his right leg which he sustained during the third T20I against West Indies in Kolkata.
Chahar then suffered a back injury and was ruled out of the entire IPL 2022 season. He eventually resumed training from August and made his return during the ODIs against Zimbabwe.
2022 has been a stop-start year for Washington. Testing positive for COVID-19 meant he missed the tour of England and the ODIs against South Africa in January after missing the second half of IPL 2021 due to a finger injury.
Although he played in an ODI against the West Indies in Ahmedabad in February, a hamstring injury ruled him out of them and the subsequent T20 against Sri Lanka. During IPL 2022, he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad but missed further matches due to injury.
He then underwent rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in June, due to which he had to miss the tour of England and West Indies. During his county stint with Lancashire, he took a hard fall on his left shoulder while diving onto the ground during a Royal London One-Day Cup match against Worcestershire on 10 August.
That injury forced him out of India’s three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe. Ironically, Washington was named as Chahar’s replacement for the ODIs against South Africa.
Apart from these two, captain Rohit Sharma batted in the second ODI against Bangladesh despite pain in his left thumb and missed the third ODI and Test series.
When he came back for T20 against Australia, played in Nagpur and Hyderabad. But on the eve of the T20 against South Africa, he had to pull out due to a back injury just before the T20 World Cup. There is no news yet on when Bumrah will be available next.
K.L. Rahul himself has had a groin injury problem, due to which he underwent surgery. Harshal Patel suffered a rib injury, ruling him out of the Asia Cup, before recovering in time for the T20 World Cup. Kuldeep Yadav suffered a hand injury that ruled him out of the home T20s against South Africa, the tour of England and the ODIs against the West Indies.
The same happened with Chahar, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Wriddhiman Saha along with Bumrah and Hardik Pandya before the pandemic.
When a player is injured, he has to stay in rehab for a certain period of time. After the rehab period is over, another detailed assessment of fitness is done before the green signal is issued.
In the ongoing Indian home season, India will play three T20Is against Sri Lanka and as many ODIs before playing the same number of matches against New Zealand. Australia will then arrive for four Tests and three ODIs before the start of the IPL.
