Bengaluru: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, who played her last Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open last month, has been roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as their guide for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL). “It is a pleasure for me to join the RCB women’s team as a mentor,” said Sania, who has won six Grand Slams and 43 WTA titles, in an RCB statement.
Sania said, “Indian women’s cricket has seen a significant change in the form of the Women’s Premier League and I am really looking forward to being a part of this revolutionary step. RCB has been a popular team in the IPL and a much followed team over the years. I am very happy to see them making a team for the Women’s Premier League. This will take women’s cricket to new heights in the country. Will open new doors for women cricketers and help make the sport the first career choice for young girls and young parents.
Sania retired from tennis after the Australian Open earlier this year where she and her partner Rohan Bopanna finished runners-up in the mixed doubles event. RCB have fielded a strong squad comprising 18 players, including some of the biggest names in women’s cricket like Smriti Mandhana, Australia’s Ellyse Perry and medium pacer Megan Schutt, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine, England captain Heather Knight, South African Key all-rounder Dane van Niekerk and India Under-19 star Richa Ghosh.
