New Delhi: Aaron Finch, the 24th captain of the Australian cricket team, has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals. The third ODI against New Zealand to be played on Sunday will be the last match of his career. Finch, who turns 36 in November, will continue to captain the T20 side, which is aiming to start the World Cup at home from next month.
Aaron Finch will play his 146th match at the Cairns Stadium, in which he has captained the team in 54 matches. With 17 centuries, he comes at number four after Ricky Ponting (29), David Warner and Mark Waugh (18). This surprising decision of Finch came when he was struggling in the 50-over format. In the last seven innings, only 26 runs came off his bat. Aaron Finch’s real plan was to captain till the World Cup to be held in India in 2023, that was also his ultimate goal. But in his statement, he talked about the new leader.
Aaron Finch made his debut against Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2013 along with Philly Hughes and Usman Khawaja. Seeing when he became the need of the team, it was not known. In just his 49th match, he had become the 2015 World Champion. When New Zealand were defeated in the final in Melbourne itself.
Talking about his retirement, Finch further said, ‘It has been a wonderful journey with some incredible memories. I have been extremely fortunate to be part of some wonderful ODI teams. I have been blessed with all the people I have played with and many people behind the scenes. I thank all those who have helped and supported me in my journey to this point.
