Jinping arrived here on Thursday to mark the 25th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. Britain returned Hong Kong to China on July 1, 1997. Xi is on a visit to Hong Kong after nearly two and a half years due to the outbreak of the Corona virus.
Speaking at an event to mark the occasion, Xi said the policy of “one country, two systems” has achieved universal success.
This policy gives Hong Kong its own laws and the right to form its own government.
“There is no reason to change such a successful system, but it should be maintained for a long time,” Xi said.
His statement appears to be an attempt to reassure the people of Hong Kong that even after 50 years, Hong Kong’s independence will be maintained.
He warned that there would be no tolerance for foreign interference or traitors in Hong Kong affairs. He said that “protecting the interests of national sovereignty, security and development” is the top priority.
“No country or region in the world will allow foreign or anti-national forces to seize power,” Xi said.
Xi last visited Hong Kong on July 1, 2017 to celebrate this special day.
Under Jinping’s leadership, China has made many changes in Hong Kong, including introducing tougher national security laws, introducing ‘patriotic’ courses in schools and changing election laws to crack down on protests and quell dissent.
Earlier, on the special occasion, Xi administered the oath of office to John Lee as Hong Kong’s new leader on Friday. Lee is a former security officer. Action was taken on the incidents of dissatisfaction since the 2019 pro-democracy demonstrations in the city under his supervision.
Taking the oath, Lee pledged to uphold the city’s mini-constitution, the Basic Law, and allegiance to Hong Kong. He also resolved to remain accountable to the Chinese government.
Li also took part in a flag-hoisting ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the handing over of Hong Kong to Chinese rule in the morning before the swearing-in ceremony. The event was attended by Xi Jinping, outgoing city leader Carrie Lam and many others.
The flag-hoisting ceremony was held amid strong winds and police officers carrying flags of China and Hong Kong marched in Chinese ‘goose-stepping’ style instead of British-style marches.
