China’s statement created a ruckus
In November 2006, the then Chinese President Hu Jintao was about to visit India. Just a week before his visit, Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi staked claim on Arunachal Pradesh. Yuxi had said that Arunachal Pradesh comes under the border of China. In his words, ‘Our position is that the whole of Arunachal Pradesh is in the Chinese territory and Tawang is a part of it. We claim this entire share. This is our official position.
Jintao was scheduled to visit India from 20 to 23 November 2006. His visit was termed as an important moment in Sino-Indian relations. But the ambassador’s statement increased India’s tension. Sun Yuxi said this in an interview given to an Indian channel. He was asked whether China wanted India to give up nuclear weapons.
stability claim
Yuxi further said, ‘Unfortunately there are five nuclear superpowers in the world. This number should be less. We would be happy if we could give up our nuclear weapons and we are working towards an international agreement that would help in giving up these weapons. Yuxi also said that there is no truth in the fact that China is trying to stop India. At the same time, it has been its foreign policy to promote political stability and economic development in the region.
always have bad eyesight
When the British rule ended in India in 1947, China turned its evil eyes on Arunachal Pradesh. China describes Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet. It is nowhere recorded in history that Arunachal has ever been a part of China or Tibet. Despite this, China has always been making Arunachal Pradesh a point of tension between itself and India. In 1952, when the Bandung Conference took place, China agreed on the Panchsheel principles. But since 1961, China has remained aggressive on Arunachal Pradesh. This is the reason why whenever a representative of the Government of India or a guest of a foreign government visits Arunachal Pradesh, China gets chilly.
