Amsterdam : When the Nazis were fleeing Europe in the last days of World War II, four German soldiers are said to have buried a large ‘treasure’ somewhere in the Dutch countryside. It contained a lot of gold coins, jewelry, diamonds, watches and other valuables. Now after almost 80 years, a hope has arisen to find that treasure. The National Archives of the Netherlands has released some of the documents. They also include a map that can lead to that treasure.
It is estimated that the treasure may contain four chests of weapons filled with coins, expensive watches, jewellery, diamonds and other precious stones. It is believed that the total value of this treasure in today’s time can be equal to 15.85 million pounds (more than 1.5 billion rupees). Annette Valkens, a consultant to the National Archives, which released more than 1,300 historical documents last week, said a lot of researchers, journalists and amateur archaeologists are interested and excited.
Dutch government made several attempts to find
Will any explorers be able to find this treasure once the map is revealed, it will be interesting to see. A thick file amid World War II documents is living proof of the Netherlands’ failed attempts to find Nazi treasure. Researchers believe the treasure was buried in April 1945 when German troops were on the run. Valakens said that they decided to bury the treasure because they were scared.
German soldier made a map
The treasure is believed to have been buried at Omren after which several attempts were made to find it. The Dutch government called back a Nazi official to search for it, but this effort was also unsuccessful. Experts are not sure who made the map but believe it was a German soldier. Some say that the explorers may have already discovered the treasure but not announced it.
