McCarthy was threatened
China asserts its rights over Taiwan. At the same time, he does not like any country’s official contact with Taiwan. McCarthy was threatened by China. McCarthy, a resident of California, is the second contender for the post of US President. China had threatened him and said that he was playing ahead by meeting the President of Taiwan.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning had said, ‘China strongly opposes Sai Ing Wen’s passage through its border and his meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. This is a serious violation of the One China principle, the Third Sino-US Joint Communique and China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
America’s strong ties
Taiwan is a rapidly growing democracy and has had its own government for several decades. Taiwan has its own army as well as an independent judiciary. Plus it has all the stuff needed for a fully functioning country. But only a few countries give it the status of a sovereign country. America has formally recognized China but it is also a big supporter of Taiwan. America also has strong defense ties with this country.
Support for Taiwan in the US House
Taiwan has strong bipartisan support in the US Congress, and has grown closer to the US under President Tsai Ing Wen. In August last year, former US speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. China was greatly infuriated by this visit. She was the first US leader to visit China in two decades. On Monday, China’s embassy in Los Angeles said that the meeting between McCarthy and the Taiwanese President in California hurt the national sentiment of 1.4 billion Chinese citizens. At the same time, it has weakened the foundation of political relations between China and America.
