Cultivation of local products will be encouraged
The aim of this move of the Uttarakhand government is to encourage farmers to cultivate local products. By promoting local products, it will get a bigger market. If the demand for the products increases, it will also increase the income of the farmers. By getting GI tag, it will be clear that the product is related to the concerned area. By this people will get information about its merits and importance.
The main objective of the scheme is to stop the migration of people from the hilly area. People based on agriculture are leaving their homes and moving towards the market and this is reducing the local produce. If their products start getting fair price, then it will be successful in stopping the migration of farmers.
Local farming will get big market
Minister Ganesh Joshi says that after GI tagging, local farming will get a big market. With this, various types of pulses and other products produced in the hilly region will also be saved from extinction. The most important point is to prevent migration from hilly areas. The Minister said that due to less transportation options and lack of marketing channels in the state, very few people want to make agriculture their main source of income.
The Minister said that the Rajma of Harsil, Chakrata and Munsiyari, red paddy of Uttarkashi, Chakrata and Maize of Nainital need adequate protection and promotion for their survival. Munsiyari Rajma is already a GI-tagged product, but its low production remains a matter of concern in the state.
