The country has lost its first Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash. This was not the first helicopter accident involving General Rawat in his 43-year long military career. But then he had defeated death. After one such incident, he told his senior, ‘I am a hill man… I am not going to die’. But this time it could not happen!
If only! General Rawat returning this time too
Lt Gen MG Datar (retd), a former commander of the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, told the Times of India, “When I got to know about this accident (Coonoor), I was sure that he would survive safely and Will once again beat him to death in the same way he did almost a decade ago when he was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of ‘3 Spire Corps’.
I am not going to die in such a small incident… when Rawat said after an accident
Lt Gen Datar recalls, ‘When I met Rawat after the accident, asked him about it, then he replied – Sir, I am a hill man, I am not going to die in such a small incident. I belong to the Gurkha Rifles which is known for its fearlessness. I belong to the hills of Uttarakhand. The people there are also known for their fearlessness.
His helicopter also crashed in 2015
In fact, about 7 years ago in 2015, General Rawat’s helicopter crashed when he was a lieutenant general. On 3 February 2015, his Cheetah helicopter crashed just 20 seconds after takeoff in Dimapur, Nagaland. Then he and the rest of the people in the helicopter had minor injuries.
General Rawat’s father was a lieutenant general in the army
General Rawat belonged to a military family. His father Lt Gen Laxman Singh Rawat had been the Deputy Army Chief. Rawat, who comes from Uttarakhand, the land of heroes, once said in his interview that there is something special in the soil and water of Uttarakhand.

‘The soil of Uttarakhand is special…’
In the interview, when he was asked what is there in the land of Uttarakhand, which gives so much heroism to the country, he said, ‘The land of Uttarakhand is called Devbhoomi’. It is so called because the soil and water that is there flows through the area where the deities reside. Therefore, perhaps born in the soil there and who has drank water, this courage probably comes automatically. But I do not want to say that the rest of the countrymen are somehow weaker than the countrymen of Uttarakhand. All the people are strong. But there is something special in the soil and water of Uttarakhand.
