new Delhi: Officials of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s education department said on Saturday that they have not issued any order prohibiting students from wearing ‘religious attire’ in schools. Earlier, the Chairman of the Education Committee of the Corporation asked the officials to ensure that the students did not come to the schools wearing ‘religious dress’. SDMC’s statement has come a day after this.
A senior official of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said on condition of anonymity that the education department of the civic body has not issued any such order. Nitika Sharma, chairperson of the education committee of SDMC, wrote to the director of education, asking her to ensure that no student came to schools in ‘religious attire’. In the letter, Sharma wrote, ‘Recently, it has been observed that some parents are sending their children to school in religious attire which is not correct. This may develop a mindset of inequality among the students, which is not good for their future at all.
“Keeping in view all these factors, all zonal officers should be directed to ensure that students can wear dress other than dress only during school competitions and festivals,” it said. On normal days, students should be present in school dress.’ SDMC has about 568 primary schools with about 2.5 lakh students. These schools provide education up to the fifth standard.
