New Delhi: Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting fears out-of-form David Warner is at risk of being ruled out of the Ashes series and his Test career could end in tragedy after a prolonged failure with the bat. Ponting feels Warner will struggle to find a place in the Ashes squad on the tour of England and his Test career may not end on his own terms. Warner had a disappointing tour of India where he scored 1, 10 and 15 in three innings before fracturing his elbow.
Keep in mind that Warner has returned to Australia after being injured. The left-handed batsman scored runs at an average of just 9.5 on the last tour of England in 2019. Ponting said, ‘I heard him talking about his cycle. The current cycle will end after the World Test Championship which is obviously a week before the first Ashes Test and I think if all goes well, he would want to keep David with him at least till the end of this Test match. ‘ He further said, ‘However it will depend on that. As a batsman, you can only score runs and if you don’t score runs then you are in a difficult situation. Ponting said, ‘It has happened to all of us, it has happened to me. When you reach a certain age and your form seems to be dropping a bit, the critics take over and then it doesn’t take long.
Ponting feels Warner should have quit Test cricket after scoring a double century in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Melbourne last summer, which was also his 100th match, or else he should have been given the go-ahead after the next match at his home ground in Sydney. Should have done this. The former Australia captain said, “To finish it the way he wanted, I think he probably should have done it after the Sydney Test.” He scored 200 in Melbourne, played his 100th Test, played his 101st Test in Sydney which was his home ground and probably would have finished it there.
