New Delhi: India and Australia are locking horns for the Border Gavaskar Trophy and the first match of the series is to be held in Nagpur on February 9. Two days before this, Aaron Finch, the captain of Australia’s world-winning T20 team, has surprised by retiring from all formats of international cricket. He said goodbye to ODI cricket in September 2022.

The 36-year-old was part of the Australia squad that won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015, while captaining the T20 World Cup squad in 2021. Announcing his retirement, Finch said- Realizing that I will not be able to play till the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right time to step down and give the team time to plan.

He said about his family and fans – I would like to thank my family, especially my wife Amy, my teammates, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association. Who allowed me to play the sport that I love. I would like to thank all the fans who have supported me throughout my international career.

Said about the charismatic journey – The first win of the T20 World Cup in 2021 and the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will always be great moments for me. It has been an incredible honor to represent Australia for 12 years, playing alongside the greatest of all time. Finch is the leading run-scorer for Australia in T20 Internationals. He has scored 3120 runs at an average of 34.28 and a strike-rate of 142.53. His high score of 172 made against Zimbabwe in 2018 is still the record.

The Australian team has to play the T20 series in South Africa at the end of August. That means he has plenty of time to appoint a captain. It is also possible that Pat Cummins will also get the T20 captaincy after Test and ODI.
