It was the first daily soap in the history of Indian television to complete 1000 episodes. It was the first time that Indian television saw a typical family drama covering a wide range of reality and emotions. The show also popularized the word ‘Saas-Bahu’ and kept it associated with TV for a long time. The show was the first to be dubbed in multiple languages. It was even dubbed in international languages.
Mihir had to be brought back
This was the first time that the makers and the channel felt the power of a TV serial. When lead actor Amar Upadhyay, who played the role of Mihir Virani, was killed by the makers, this fictional tragedy became a national tragedy. It was discussed from home to office. After Mihir’s death, protests were held to bring back this character. After which finally the makers had to revive the dead character.

Another interesting fact about the story of the show was that it took several leaps. The story was carried forward for years. Many newcomers joined the show and many left, but the drama continued. Sudha Shivpuri, playing the character of Baa, always remained in the show. It can be estimated that Ba was shown to be over 100 years old in the show.

Apart from many interesting twists, this TV serial, one of the longest running shows, also introduced the concept of plastic surgery. This concept was used whenever an actor left the show.
favorite daughter-in-law
This show also made the daughter-in-law very popular. Tulsi Virani’s character was played by Smriti Irani, who was the all-time favorite daughter-in-law of the audience. When Smriti left the show, Gautami Kapoor played the role, but the audience liked only Smriti as Tulsi, so she was brought back in the show.

Apart from the Saas-Bahu drama, several tracks were shown in it. It featured domestic violence. Some pertinent issues like goal taking were also raised. Overall, social messages were also given through this serial. When Tulsi killed her son because he had raped his wife, the marital rape became a household discussion.

‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ went on air on 3 July 2000 on Star Plus and its last episode was shown on 6 November 2008. It was co-produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor under the banner of Balaji Telefilms.
