The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has directed e-commerce companies to sell Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani medicines only after customers upload the prescriptions of registered doctors on their platform. This rule shall be applicable for the medicines specified under Schedule E(1) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. Schedule E lists ‘toxic’ substances under Ayurveda (including Siddha) and Unani systems of medicine. Such drugs need to be taken under medical supervision.

The CCPA said in a statement issued on Thursday, “Consumption of such drugs without medical supervision can lead to serious health problems. E-commerce platforms have been advised that sale or facility of sale of such medicines shall be made only after valid prescription of a registered Ayurveda, Siddha or Unani practitioner. These will be uploaded by the user on the platform.” Further, the label of the container of such drugs should have the word ‘Caution’ written in both English and Hindi languages.

Significantly, the Ministry of AYUSH had issued a public notice on February 1, 2016, informing the stakeholders that such medicines need to be taken under medical supervision and they should avoid buying them online without medical consultation.
