Story: The film begins and the opening sun itself hears the sound of an invisible creature screaming without any visuals. By the time the audience understands something, it is revealed that the sound is of a drink-making machine, which one of the film’s main characters, PhD student Kate DiBiaski, is poking for herself. It is a very small thing that a person is pouring a drink for himself, but this opening scene is very important to tell about the film in law. Frankly speaking, just understand how a person puts a scream in his glass with the help of modern technology, this is enough to understand our modern times. Apart from this, a violent lyric rap playing in the same scene also says a lot about Kate’s character. Well let’s move on. In the first few minutes of the film, it becomes clear that Kate DiBiaski (Jennifer Lawrence) searches for a comet that is about to hit Earth in a few months. Adding yogurt to this information is Professor Mindy, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. And as I write that, it should be clear that Leonardo has put life into the character. It doesn’t seem to be the same Leonardo who astonishes people in Shutter Island. Such a straightforward, simple character who trembles even while speaking in front of the President and makes a TV show uncomfortable with the sound of his breath. After Kate’s comet discovery, there is a celebratory atmosphere when Professor Mindy notices that this comet, which will be named after Kate’s name, the DeBiaski Comet, is rapidly approaching the earth. According to calculations, after 6 months and 14 days this comet will destroy human civilization on Earth. Kate and Professor Mindy panic and inform the government about this, and the next two meet in the White House. During this, there is a scene which may keep you hooked even after leaving the film’s mind. Snacks are kept in the waiting area of the White House, which are absolutely free, but Kate and Professor Mindy do not know about this. After waiting for a long time for the President, both of them get hungry and the General brings them the same snacks but takes his money from them. At first, both of them do not understand anything, but when Kate goes to get snacks again, she learns that that American army general took money from them for something that was absolutely free. Through this scene, an attempt has been made to satirize the capitalist thinking of America. After this scene the thing ‘In capitalism, everything has a price’ can come to your mind. After this, whatever happens in the film will come under the category of dark comedy. This means the world is about to end and the rants of politicians, social media and even the general public are not ending. While the current president (Meryl Streep) makes it an election issue, Kate’s shouting on a TV show that we’re all going to die becomes meme material for social media. The world continues to move on its nose in the direction of the nose and all this drama continues. But throughout the film the fear remains that comet is also coming, how will these people deal with it? In a scene in the film, Kate also says that the government does not have the brain to do as bad as you think. Be it Ariana Grande, Timothy or Cate Blanchett amidst all this humour, everyone leaves an indelible mark on the audience. What to say about Meryl Streep, she was, is and will be a classic. Apart from all this, Mark Rylance has done a great job in the character of Peter, a billionaire. A tone that changes over time says a lot without saying anything. It was interesting to see how Peter’s AI system takes money out of people’s pockets without asking them and went home as a warning.
Review: The film has taken a dig at many issues like social media culture, AAI, entertainment industry, politics, talk-talk about the government imposing the National Security Act. Director Adam McKay and journalist David Sirota have tried to put various social media references in this film. Perhaps if these two had not worked so hard on this aspect, then the film could have been a bit tighter. Many times the film, which has been tried to convey a message by making it a mockery, turns out to be really mockery. In other places, the film has also looked very good. Be it Leonardo’s character or Meryl Streep’s, there has been no laxity on the part of the director. The film is loaded with a stellar starcast like Leonardo, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Timothy, Mark Rylance and Jonah Hill. Its advantage is also seen, when these artists have made a very simple dialogue tremendous with their performance. The film is great, could have been better.
Why watch: If you are a nihilist then the last scene will look great. Just joking. The film should be seen for Leonardo’s nervousness and Jennifer’s expressions. Even to know to what level governments have the capacity to deceive their people.
