Putin’s fourth term
Putin is currently moving towards completing his fourth term as President. He was elected President for two consecutive terms in the year 2000 and 2008. In the year 2012, he again returned to this post. Russia has changed its constitution several times. In 1993, the term of the President was reduced to four years. It used to be five years earlier. Boris Yeltison was the President at that time.
After this, it was changed again in the year 2008 and it was reduced to six years. When the elections were held in 2012, there was only a six-year rule at that time. In the year 2020, Russia conducted a referendum which was based on the recent constitutional amendments. It also included the issue related to extension of tenure. This was approved and the way was opened for President Putin to remain in the presidency till the year 2036.
what do you think putin
Putin has so far neither confirmed nor denied that he wants to be president again. In October 2020, during the Valdai Discussion Club, he was asked a question related to this. At that time the amendment had come into force. To this Putin replied, ‘He knows very well that at some point it has to end. What will happen in the year 2024 or after that only time will tell.
Putin also responded to the amendments that were made. “We do not intend to give the outgoing head of state a chance to be re-elected in 2024,” he said. Rather it is to strengthen the national sovereignty by revamping the constitution.
