British Sikh Councilor Jaswant Singh Birdi: British Sikh Counselor of Indian Origin Jaswant Singh Virdi Made history in Britain. He became the first turbaned Sikh Lord Mayor of the city of Coventry. Jaswant Singh Virdi recently took over as the Lord Mayor and his wife Krishna became the Lord Mayoress. During this, he said that I am feeling very proud to be the Lord Mayor of my adopted home city.
He said that I am indebted to this city. This city has given me and my family a lot over the years and now I will be more than happy to show my love towards it. Virdi said that as a Sikh, wearing a turban with ‘Chains of Office’ means a lot to me. Virdi further said that it will reflect our multicultural city and perhaps it will inspire others as well.

Born in Punjab, childhood spent in Kolkata
Actually, Jaswant Singh Virdi is related to Punjab. He was born here. His childhood was spent in Kolkata for some time. About 60 years ago he came to Coventry with his family. Earlier around 1950, his family lived in Kenya. Jaswant Singh did his primary and secondary schooling from there.
Councilor of Coventry for 17 years
He served as a local councilor in Coventry for 17 years before becoming Lord Mayor. He represented Bablake ward for the last 9 years. He has replaced Mayor Kevin Matton in the role of Lord Mayor.
At the same time, Mayor Mal Mutton has been named Deputy Lord Mayor. Prior to this he had served as Deputy Lord Mayor for the last 12 months. Apart from being the Mayor, Jaswant Singh has been very active in setting up religious, social and community projects in Coventry.
