Journey from one seat to government formation
When Imran Khan, the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, formed ‘Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’ (PTI) in 1996, political parties established over the years never thought that he would ever be able to form the government. Even the account of the party could not be opened in the 1997 elections. Even in 2002 elections, only Imran Khan could win. The party boycotted the elections held in 2008 under the leadership of Musharraf.
In the 2013 general elections, suddenly Imran’s party changed the whole game. PTI came second in terms of getting votes. It was even successful in forming the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In 2018, a record was created. No party had ever got so many votes in the history of Pakistan. 1.69 crore people voted for the party.
