The Azov Regiment played an important role in the battle with Russia in the city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine. The regiment has been repeatedly accused by Russian authorities and state media of adopting Nazi tactics and atrocities on Ukrainian non-soldiers.
However, evidence has not been made public in support of declaring this unit of the Ukrainian army as a terrorist group.
The Azov Regiment is a unit in the National Guard of Ukraine. It was established in the year 2014 from the Azov Battalion, one of the many volunteer contingents. It helps Ukraine’s relatively under-funded and questionable military fighting pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.
Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office proposed in May this year to designate Azov as a terrorist group.
Several fighters of the Azov regiment are currently hostage to Moscow. The Russian authorities have filed several criminal cases against him, including the murder of civilians.
