PM for eight years
Many foreign leaders including Prime Minister from India and Vice President Kamala Harris from America are going to attend Abe’s funeral. It is being told that $1.2 million will be spent on this funeral, which is a little more than 97 crores in Indian rupees. There is an uproar in Japan over this issue. The public is alleging that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is spending their tax money on such an event.
Abe, who was the Prime Minister of Japan from 2012 to 2020, was termed by Japanese political experts as a PM connected to the general public. But now they have to face the anger of this common public. The opposition had so far been raising concerns that Abe and his party were affiliated with the Unification Church. The connection between Abe and this church came to the fore after his death. When Abe was shot in Nara in July, it was reported that the killer was associated with the same church.
criticism of the church
The killer had said that Abe promoted this group. Critics of the Unification Church believe that the church conducts large-scale weddings and aggressively raises funds. It was said on behalf of the suspect that his family had become poor because of the church. In the investigation conducted by the LDP, it has been found that 179 of its 379 MPs had contacted this church.
According to government estimates, Abe’s funeral will cost 1.65 billion yen, or about $ 1.2 million. According to the general public and the opposition, at a time when many people in the country are facing financial difficulties, such an expensive funeral is going to hurt. Japan last performed a state funeral of any of its PM in the year 1967. Its expenditure was borne by both the party and the government.
‘Abe not worth it’
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida wanted Abe to be given a state funeral six days after his death. But there was a poll in which it came out that the public is divided on this issue. But when the connection between the leaders of the Unification Church and the LDP came to the fore and the funeral expenses increased, the anger of the people increased. In a recent survey conducted by Minishi newspaper, 69 percent of the people opposed this event. He has said that Abe did not deserve such respect and such expense.
