US President Joe Biden said recently that his country was open to talks for a new deal to control new weapons after the “New START” treaty expires in 2026.
Commenting on this, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that such talks are long overdue and Russia has repeatedly stated the need for such talks.
Russia and the US had agreed to extend it for another five years, days before the ‘New Start’ was to end in February 2021.
The treaty was signed in 2010 by then US President Barack Obama and then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. It prevents each country from deploying more than 1550 nuclear warheads and more than 700 missiles and bombs. AP
