Islamabad, Nov 15 (PTI) An important border post between Pakistan and Afghanistan remained closed for the third consecutive day on Tuesday following a firing incident.
In this firing, a personnel of Pakistan Paramilitary Force was killed. Since the incident, the trade between the two countries stopped through here.
The Chaman border in Balochistan was closed on Sunday after an armed man from the Afghan side opened fire on Pakistani security personnel near Bab-e-Dosti, killing a paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) soldier. . Two other soldiers were injured in the firing.
Pakistani authorities have suspended trade with Afghanistan following the incident. According to an official statement, “The bilateral trade and immigration system has been suspended at the border for the third day in a row and the movement of people on foot has been closed.”
Chaman is the most important border post for trade between the two countries.
It is being told that the terrorist responsible for the shooting was posing as a Taliban officer. The search is on for him.
Abdul Hameed Zehri, deputy commissioner of Chaman town bordering Afghanistan’s Spin Boldak district, told the media that Pakistanis in Afghanistan were being allowed to enter the country after verifying their identity.
“High-level talks are being held to discuss the problems along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and the two sides are expected to meet on Tuesday,” the Deputy Commissioner said.
The border will remain closed until the person responsible for this unfortunate incident is handed over to the Pakistani authorities, he added.
The Deputy Commissioner also said that the district hospital as well as the areas near the border have been put on high alert.
Officials said hundreds of trucks carrying goods were stranded on both sides of the border.
Officials have not yet said when the border post at Chaman will reopen.
