Bandung police chief Ashwin Sipyung said a man tried to enter the Astana Anyar police station on a motorcycle and detonate himself where police officers were queuing up for the morning assembly.
West Java police spokesman Ibrahim Tompo said the man detonated his explosives while entering the police station, killing himself and an officer instantly. He said six other officers and a civilian were taken to a nearby hospital in an injured condition.
He said police were still investigating the attack in the city of Bandung in West Java. The person belonging to the radical group has not been identified.
A video circulating on social media showed body parts strewn near a burning motorcycle at the police station gate.
Television reports showed white smoke billowing from the building and people running in panic after the loud bang.
Indonesia has been battling terrorists since the 2002 bombings on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.
Targeted attacks on foreigners have been replaced in recent years by large-scale targeting of people considered infidels by government, police and counter-insurgency forces and terrorists.
