China’s Defense Ministry spokesman Tan Kefei said in a statement late on Thursday that the US move “seriously violated international norms and set a disastrous precedent” amid the destruction of the US balloon. “This irresponsible and totally wrong approach by the US did not create a proper environment for dialogue and exchange between the two militaries,” Tan said. That is why China did not accept the US proposal for a phone call between the two Defense Ministers. Beijing said the US “overreacted” by destroying the balloon. He termed the action as ‘irresponsible’.

40 countries affected by China’s balloon program

Meanwhile, senior US administration officials said on Thursday that China’s balloon surveillance program has affected at least 40 countries, including the US. But he refused to name the countries where these balloons have been seen so far. China has denied running any such program. But the US said it was working on taking action, including banning organizations and companies promoting such programs in China. “We detected this system early and took prudent action, so we were able to reduce its intelligence-gathering potential,” said US State Department spokesman Ned Price.

America will help other countries

But it will not be possible for every country to do so, he said, and therefore the US will provide information to those countries that may be helpful in protecting against such a program. He said that this program is spread across 40 countries in five continents. The United States on Saturday destroyed a large balloon in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina with the help of a fighter jet that had entered US airspace on January 30. The US has shared this information with its Quad allies and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies. Price said the US is looking to form a formal coalition of countries targeted by such a program.
