- India had given the proposal in October last year, then it was evasive
Foreign Office spokesman Asim Iftikhar Ahmed told the weekly briefing that India was allowed to send wheat to Afghanistan on the basis of a humanitarian approach and through Pakistan as an exception. He said that we have informed India the necessary details of the arrangements made by Pakistan and it has been almost three weeks. We await India’s response on the date of shipment of the first consignment and other relevant information.
In October last year, India had sent the proposal
India had sent a proposal to Pakistan in October last year to send 50,000 tonnes of wheat and life-saving medicines to Afghanistan via the neighboring country, whose reply has been sent on November 24. India last month said it was in touch with Pakistani officials to discuss the modalities for sending consignments of wheat and medicines to Afghanistan via Pakistan.
India said – we are in touch with Pakistan
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindan Bagchi told reporters at a media briefing in New Delhi that we are in touch with Pakistani authorities to send 50,000 tonnes of wheat and other medical supplies as humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan. This is a very complex operation and I would request you guys to be patient.
Ahmed, a spokesman for the Foreign Office in Islamabad, said Pakistan wanted friendly relations with all its neighbours, including India. He said that Pakistan is committed to a meaningful, constructive and result-oriented dialogue with the neighboring country, but now the entire responsibility of creating a conducive environment for this lies with India.
What is Pakistan offering to India?
India has said that it wants normal neighborly relations with Pakistan, which is free from terrorism, enmity and violence. India maintains that talks and terrorism cannot go together. Earlier Pakistan was proposing to send wheat to Afghanistan through its trucks. After India’s protest, Pakistan offered to send wheat by Afghan trucks. But, India wants wheat to be sent to Afghanistan by its trucks.
