There was no electricity in the region on Thursday after a fire destroyed a transmission line at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, raising the country’s risk of a nuclear accident. Significantly, the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986 in the country is still scaring people.
Russian officials in Zaporizhia have blamed Ukraine for the fire. He said on Friday that the plant was operating normally, but because of the problem, the plant was supplying electricity only to Russian-held areas and not to the rest of Ukraine.
However, Ukraine’s electricity transmission operator Ukrainego said on Friday that two main lines supplying electricity to the Zaporizhia plant had been restored. It was damaged in the bombing of Russia.
The company said in a statement that its repair team will also soon complete restoration work on other main lines, which will strengthen the safety of the plant.
Ukraine’s nuclear plant operator Energoatum said on Friday morning that all power units at the plant had lost contact with the power grid and repairs were underway. By 2 p.m. it reported that the plant had been reconnected to the power grid and was providing electricity “for Ukraine’s needs”.
International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said on Thursday he expected to send a team to the plant within a few days. Talks about how the team will reach the plant are complicated but are progressing.
Concerns have arisen in European countries about the plant.
French President Emmanuel Macron said, “There has been a great concern about nuclear security and therefore since March I have been in talks with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency to do everything possible to protect first Chernobyl and now Zaporizhia.” Steps should be taken.”
Lana Gerkal, adviser to Ukraine’s energy minister, told the media on Thursday that the IAEA team is going to visit the Zaporizhia plant, preparations for which are being made. The plant has been occupied by Russian forces since the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Jerkel alleged that Russia wanted to block the visit of the IAEA team. Ukraine alleges that Moscow’s military has seized the plant and that weapons are being stored in it and attacks are being carried out around it. At the same time, Moscow alleges that Ukraine is continuously attacking the plant.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said an area near the plant was bombed overnight by Russia, while the Russian Defense Ministry on Friday again accused the Ukrainian military of bombing the Zaporizhia power plant.
