Dhaka, Aug 7 (PTI) Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. During this, he reiterated Bangladesh’s support for the principle of “one China” and said that relations with his country’s neighboring country are important.
During the meeting, Wang Yi promised better trade relations, investments and support for infrastructure development in Bangladesh.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang arrived in Dhaka on Saturday evening amid escalating tensions between China and Taiwan following the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
He also met Prime Minister Hasina and External Affairs Minister A.K. Abdul Momin met. A senior US State Department official is also visiting Bangladesh during Wang’s visit.
Wang met Hasina at her official residence Gan Bhavan, after which Hasina’s press secretary Ehsanul Karim said, “She (Hasina) said that Bangladesh values its friendship with China and reiterated that Dhaka is ‘one of China’. Believes in ‘theory’.
Hasina made the remarks after Wang told Hasina about China’s stand on the Taiwan issue. Hasina also said that South Asian, Southeast Asian countries and China can work together for economic progress while dealing with the challenges posed by the Russo-Ukraine war.
According to Karim, Wang told Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, “China will continue to support the development of Bangladesh as a strategic development partner.”
Discussing the Rohingya refugee crisis, Hasina said that the forcibly displaced Rohingyas have now become an additional burden for Bangladesh. He sought China’s cooperation to resolve the issue.
However, Wang said that China hopes that the issue will be resolved through bilateral talks between Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Bangladesh and China signed four agreements and MoUs related to disaster management, infrastructure, cultural exchange and marine science after Wang’s meeting with Momin.
US Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Michelle J. Sisson arrived in Dhaka on a two-day visit on 6 August as part of her official three-nation tour.
Bangladesh Foreign Ministry officials have not yet reported about any meeting with him.
