Historian and researcher Nidhin Olikara has confirmed this to News9 Plus. Nidhin has informed that this sword was bought by Vijay Mallya in 2004. At that time Mallya had bought this sword for 1.5 crores. Now after about 19 years, this sword has been auctioned, which has been sold for 145 crores. In 2016, a union of 13 Indian banks tried to persuade the London High Court against issuing a freeze order on Vijay Mallya’s global assets.

In this case, Mallya later said in the court that this sword had brought bad luck for his family, so he had given it. News9 has contacted UK auction house Bonhams to trace the previous owners of the sword. The group has declined to reveal the identity of the previous and current purchasers of the sword. Enrica Madugno, Bonhams’ sales co-ordinator, said she was unable to reveal the identity of the sellers as it was against their policy.
The sword that was bought by Vijay Mallya and the sword that was auctioned on Tuesday had the same inscription written on it. The sword was also gifted to Major General Bairtud, Shamshir e Malik was also written on it. This article is also visible on the recently sold Tipu Sultan’s sword. The text engraved on the sword is exactly the same as the one Mallya had bought in 2004.
History of Tipu Sultan’s Sword
Major General Baird led the army during the attack on Srirangapatna on 4 May 1799, in which Tipu Sultan was killed. The British Army had captured Srirangapatna. After this, when Tipu’s bed chamber was seen, this sword was found there. This sword was presented to Major General Baird.
Shamshir e Malik is written on the spine of the sword, which means the sword of the king. It is written till the bottom, Ya Allah! Oh Nasir! Ya Fateh! Oh Nasir! Ya Mueen! Oh Zaheer! O Allah! O helper! Oh evergreen! Hey adder! O helper! O Evident!
