United Nations: In a milestone for humanity, the global population reached eight billion on Tuesday after adding one billion people over the past 12 years. At the same time, India is on the verge of overtaking China as the world’s most populous country next year. The UN said the global figure indicates major improvements in public health that have reduced the risk of death and increased life expectancy.

The global body said that this moment is a clarion call for humanity to look beyond numbers and fulfill its shared responsibility to protect people and the earth and must begin with the most vulnerable. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) tweeted, “Eight billion hopes. Eight billion dreams. Eight billion possibilities. Our planet is now home to eight billion people.” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the eight billion population “will be filled with tension and mistrust, crisis and conflict” if the world does not close the gap between the rich and the poor.
