Scientists have found DNA traces of a very old giant creature with long hair like wool in a soil sample taken from the Klondike region of Canada. They have claimed that the giant was alive as long as 5000 years ago and did not become extinct in North America in 7000 BCE as was believed so far. DNA found in permafrost from Yukono is about 30,000 years old. Scientists at McMaster University have investigated this.
Climate change blamed for extinction
This research has been published in Nature Communications. Recent studies have also revealed that the animals did not become extinct due to excessive hunting of humans. This has been blamed on rapid climate change in the Yukon region during the early Holocene. Giant creatures such as mammoths, horses and lions depended for their food on vast grasslands known as the ‘mammoth steppe’, which were soon covered with bushes and moss.
Fact improvement with new technology
According to Tyler Murchy, the recent research has been made possible because of better technology that was not available during his previous study. He said that now that we have this technology, we realize how much life-history information is hidden in permafrost. Scientists also claim that the horses that lived in the Yukon 5000 years ago are directly related to the horses that exist today.
