Religious organizations appeal for peace
Following the incident, a religious organization spokesman said that a large group was seen protesting, spreading violence and terror on Belgrave Road yesterday. These people also vandalized a place of worship of a religion. We are shocked and saddened to see such behavior. Please be safe, we expect our community to maintain order, live in unity and peace.
Heavy deployment of police across the city
Leicester’s police chief also released a video urging people not to engage in the violence. In a video released last night, Chief Constable Rob Nixon said: ‘We have received several reports of chaos in parts of the East Leicester area of the city. Additional police officers have been deployed on the roads. They have been given powers to expel people and to investigate by stopping anyone. Please don’t take part in such demonstrations. We are asking everyone to maintain peace.
Two people arrested, investigation underway
A Leicestershire police spokesman said two people were arrested on Saturday night and Sunday morning. He said that the reports of attack on the place of worship of a particular community are not true. Several incidents of violence and damage to properties have been reported to the police and are under investigation. We are aware of a video of a man pulling a flag outside a religious building on Melton Road in Leicester. We continue to call for dialogue and peace with the support of local community leaders. We will not tolerate violence or disorder in our city.
