China has refused to attend the G-20 meeting starting today in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The decision from China not to attend the meeting was taken at a time when Pakistan opposed the meeting being held in Srinagar. By not attending the meeting, China once again considered it more important to go with Pakistan instead of India. It is not that China has befriended Pakistan by doing so. There are other reasons behind this as well.
China supports Pakistan also because the two countries share many mutual interests and strategic views. This forms the basis of their friendship and partnership. It also includes regional security and stability. Counter-terrorism, border security and neighboring countries maintain mutual cooperation on disputed issues related to Afghanistan.

The thinking of China and Pakistan towards India has been almost similar. Both the countries are worried about India’s growing influence and power in Asia. Both see India as their rival. It is a different matter that Pakistan does not stand anywhere in front of India. Both the countries try their best to somehow push India back.
Economic cooperation and development are also important aspects
Economic cooperation and development is also one of the most important aspects of China-Pakistan relations. Both also see their mutual interest in promoting economic development, trade and investment. Dragon has also invested a lot in the neighboring country through projects like China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The purpose of Chinese investment in Pakistan is to enhance infrastructure and generate employment. It is a different matter that Pakistan is currently going through its worst phase.

To increase connectivity and trade in Pakistan, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is working on several projects to increase connectivity between other countries in the region. It is beneficial for Pakistan as well as it is strategically very important for China.
