As the chair of the SCO, New Delhi is set to host a number of events, including a conference of chief justices of member states, a meeting of foreign ministers and a summit in 2023. The chief justices of the SCO are scheduled to meet in March while the foreign ministers will meet in May. Official sources confirmed to The Express Tribune on Monday that India has sent invitations to Pakistan for the meeting of chief justices and foreign ministers.
Pakistan did not respond
However, it is not clear whether the Chief Justice and the foreign minister will attend both the events or appoint someone to represent Pakistan. According to sources, Pakistan has not yet responded to the Indian invitation. The SCO is an important forum due to the presence of China and Russia, Pakistan is unlikely to stay out of these events, reports The Express Tribune.
SCO conference will be held in Goa
Pakistan and India were accepted as full members of the influential organization a few years ago after pledging not to influence the work of the SCO due to their bilateral disputes. The Express Tribune reported that the SCO foreign ministers’ meeting is scheduled to be held in Goa.
strained relations between the two countries
Relations between India and Pakistan have remained tense for the last few years. The Pulwama terror attack in February 2019 and then the Balakot air strike created distance between the two countries. In February 2021, there was a glimpse of softening between the two countries when both agreed to re-implement the ceasefire agreement on the Line of Control.
In the new information that has come out recently, it has been claimed that in the beginning of 2021, relations between India and Pakistan can improve. It was said at that time that the Prime Minister of India could meet with his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan during a conference.
