Khalistan movement started 93 years ago in 1929
In the year 1929, in the Lahore session of Congress, Motilal Nehru proposed complete Swaraj. During this time, three types of groups opposed this proposal. One of these factions was of Shiromani Akali Dal under the leadership of Master Tara Singh.
At this time, for the first time Tara Singh put forth the demand for a separate state for the Sikhs. In 1947 this demand turned into a movement. It was named Punjabi Suba Movement.
At the time of independence, Punjab was divided into two parts. Shiromani Akali Dal was demanding a separate Sikh province i.e. Sikh Pradesh on linguistic basis in India itself. The State Reorganization Commission formed in independent India refused to accept this demand. Movements and demonstrations for a separate Sikh state continued for 19 years throughout Punjab. During this period, incidents of violence started increasing. Finally in 1966, the Indira Gandhi government decided to divide Punjab into three parts. Punjab with majority of Sikhs, Haryana for Hindi speaking people and the third part was Chandigarh.
