According to scientists, the hole in the last layer of ice in the Arctic can become a threat to the world. This was the thickest layer of ice in the Arctic, which broke through in May last year. Due to this, the cracks are increasing due to which the sea level can rise which will be dangerous.
This layer was located north of Canada’s Alsmere Island, in what is now known as The Polynia, which was last seen in 1988 and 2004. Arctic researcher Kent Moore of the University of Toronto-Missisagua said that the ice layer north of Alsmere Island is very thick, in which the hole will not have much effect. This large polynya has not happened before, it can cause cracks. This will affect the layer of thick snow.
Let us tell you that the Arctic ice layer of Alsmere Island is about 13 feet thick, this ice melts every five years and becomes so thick again. But due to the ever-increasing temperature at the North Pole, the ice surface is getting weaker. In May last year, half of the eastern part of the ice in the Vandel Sea melted into water, which is dangerous.
According to a report this year, Greenland and the Arctic together used to carry out the process of permanent deposition of ice, but this process is gradually weakening, the ice is melting continuously, scientists have estimated that this year will be winter. By the end the last ice layer will also melt. Because of this, the species living there may become extinct.
The polynya means that holes in the ice are caused by storms, when strong winds try to separate the ice, at that time there are many holes in the ice. One such storm hit the Arctic in May last year, after which the ice became polynya, that storm created cracks on the ice. A 100 km long and 30 km wide polynya was seen in the satellite image taken on May 14, 2020, which had closed over the next few days.
On investigation of this matter, it was found that a similar polynya had happened in 1988, but due to lack of technology at that time it cannot be told how big and deep this hole was. One such polynya was seen in 2004, but it was much smaller than the hole in 1988, but last year’s hole is being told as the biggest polynya ever. Because now the ice layer has become much weaker than before, which can break even with light wind.
According to researcher David Bab, this is quite strange because the Arctic has the thickest layer of ice, its melting shows how fast our environment is changing. Due to which we may get to see more polynyas in the coming time. It is believed that if there are more holes, then the life present there will end, the whole process of photosynthesis will be destroyed. Sea birds will also die due to lack of food, along with them polar bears and seals will also disappear.
As the temperature increases, the maximum number of organisms will not be able to survive in that temperature, many species may become completely extinct. Due to the melting of ice, the level of water in the sea will also increase which will also affect the life of human beings, the cities situated on the coast in the world can be submerged in water which will end the life there.
