Rishi Sunak told the cabinet that this change will be implemented from January 2024, due to which there will be a big change in the numbers of migration. However, at the moment it is not clear what effect this will have on official migration. Because at present the students and their families coming for less than a year are not counted. Last week also Sunak had said that his ministers are trying to reduce migration. However, during this he refused to discuss what would be the accepted levels.

The announcement states that parents and children of postgraduate students as well as students studying on research programs will not be granted visas to stay in the UK during the course. Last year, the UK issued 1,35,788 visas to dependents of students. These numbers are 54,486 more than 2021. This is seven times as compared to 2020. The number of students in the UK has increased since the formation of the European Economic Area (EEA) after Brexit.
