The government feared anarchy during the agitation of the opposition parties.
Dhaka (Hindustan Republic). Sheikh Hasina government of Bangladesh is going to buy 90 thousand tear gas shells from Turkey. The Bangladeshi delegation led by the Joint Secretary has visited the factories manufacturing tear gas shells in Turkey to check their effectiveness.
According to Bangladesh’s leading newspaper Dhaka Tribune, the anti-government movement has intensified ahead of Bangladesh’s 12th national election. The Awami League-led government fears that in the name of agitation, their opponents may repeat the chaotic situation of 2013-2015. To deal with them, the government has stepped up preparations at every level. In which there is preparation to buy tear gas shells along with police vigilance.
Significantly, more than a dozen political parties involved in the anti-government movement have taken to the streets to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a neutral interim administration ahead of national elections. Other major demands of the opposition group led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) include the unconditional release of BNP president and former premier Khaleda Zia and withdrawal of all cases against BNP leaders. They allege that more than 135000 politically motivated legal cases are going on against about 45 lakh supporters of BNP.
On the other hand, the government fears that the opposition parties may again create the same kind of sabotage and chaotic situation which was done in the name of the movement in 2013. The Home Ministry also fears the activity of religious fundamentalist groups and terrorist groups during this period. Due to which the situation in the country may worsen again.
In view of this situation, the government along with all the preparations at its level, has ordered to speed up the investigation and hearing of the cases registered against the elements who spread anarchy before and after the last election. Also, before the purchase of gas shells, a delegation led by Joint Secretary SM Firdaus has been sent to Turkey, which will visit the factories there to check their effectiveness.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandkar Ghulam Farooq issued instructions last week, directing the police to exercise full vigilance and also sought information about the arms and ammunition present in the police stations.
