First attack on Hamas after Netanyahu’s return
It was the first such attack in Israel from the Hamas-led region since far-right Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power. The Netanyahu-led government has vowed to take a tough stand against Palestinian terrorists. Israel’s military said five rockets were fired, two of which were intercepted and one rocket landed in open ground and the other confined to Gaza. He said its airstrikes had targeted an underground Hamas rocket-manufacturing facility and an extremists’ training area.
Israel on high alert
Hamas has claimed responsibility for the rockets fired from Gaza. Israel has been on high alert since these rockets were fired. Constant warning sirens are also being heard along the border with Gaza. However, there is no news of any Israeli civilian casualties in these attacks so far. Another person was killed in a separate incident in al-Ram, outside Jerusalem. It is being told that this incident is also related to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The attack took place ahead of the US Secretary of State’s visit.
The Israeli army and Hamas clashes come days ahead of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Israel and the West Bank. Palestinian officials said CIA director William Burns would meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday. Earlier, he had also visited Israeli and West Bank. However, the US officials in Jerusalem have not given any reaction regarding this meeting. US officials have met Palestinian presidents in the past as well.
