Islamabad, (H.I.S.). The May 9 violence in Pakistan by supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan was an attempted coup and civil war in the country. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar made this claim on Sunday. Kakar, however, denied that revenge was the motive behind taking legal action against those accused of violence.
Dozens of military installations and government buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi, were attacked during the violence that broke out on May 9 after the arrest of Imran Khan by the paramilitary Rangers.
Kakar said in an interview that the whole world saw the arson and hooliganism on May 9 and international newspapers called it a tragedy. This kind of deceitful scheme is not acceptable in any form. He also said that the May 9 violence was an “attempted coup and civil war” aimed at serving army chiefs and their teams.
Kakar said the government did not want to create an impression that revenge was being taken against those accused of the May 9 violence. He said that if legal action is not taken against those who violate the laws of the country and resort to violence, “we will be seen as a party in this matter”.
The caretaker Prime Minister said no political party has the right to throw stones at others, misbehave with them and burn buildings. Hundreds of supporters of Imran Khan were arrested for their alleged involvement in this violence.
