Bratislava, (His). There are chances of formation of a pro-Russian government in the European country Slovakia. Following Slovakia’s general election results, pro-Russian Robert Fico is expected to become Prime Minister once again. Robert Fico is considered pro-Russian. During his election campaign, he had talked about stopping military aid to Ukraine if the government is formed.
Former Prime Minister Robert Fico’s leftist party Smer got 22.9 percent of the votes in the general elections. In such a situation, the Smer Party will get 42 seats in the Parliament of Slovakia with 150 MPs. If the Smer party is successful in forming a coalition, 59-year-old Robert Fico could become the Prime Minister of Slovakia for the fourth time. Slovakian President Zuzana Caputova is considered pro-American and Robert Fico has accused her of being an American agent. Due to this, President Caputova has filed a lawsuit against Robert Fico.
Halas, the leftist party of Fico’s former aide Peter Pellegrini, got 14.7 percent of the vote. Peter broke ties with FICO due to a dispute in the 2020 elections. Now it is being speculated that he may support Robert Fico. Apart from these, another pro-Russian party Slovak National Party has won 10 seats and Conservative Christian Democrats Party has won 12 seats.
Robert Fico may face competition from the Progressive Slovakia Party. This party is considered pro-West and has won 32 seats by getting 18 percent votes. It has emerged as the second largest party in the general elections. If Robert Fico fails to form a coalition, the Progressive Slovakia Party could form the government. Slovakia’s election is also important for the Ukraine war and the formation of Robert Fico’s government may also affect the unity between the European Union and NATO.
