To make WhatsApp more friendly and safe for users, the company has come up with a new feature that will give users chat backup security. Starting today WhatsApp is adding end-to-end encryption to your cloud backups on both Android and iOS. Whereas WhatsApp itself has been end-to-end encrypted by default for the last five years. Now if you’ve chosen to back up your chats to Google Drive (from the Android version of WhatsApp) or iCloud, you can’t encrypt those backups.
In this way you can turn on the new feature
The messaging app was reportedly working on encrypting chat backups for the longest time. This feature was first revealed during several beta tests. The end-to-end encryption feature will be available for both Android and iOS users. This lets you choose to encrypt the chat that is backed up to your Google Drive and iCloud. When you encrypt your chat even WhatsApp or Facebook can’t read it. You can turn on end-to-end encryption for your backups, but this feature is said to be the default with the update. If you want to enable this feature yourself, you can select it via Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-End Encrypted Backup.

Talking about this feature, WhatsApp said that your sent and received messages are stored on the end-to-end encrypted device. Many people also want a way to back up their chats in case they lose their phone. Starting today we’re securing store backups on Google Drive or iCloud by combining them with end-to-end encryption. On this you will easily get message, media, sound, video call and chat backup. So far, no online chat company has been able to provide this facility to its users.
