Chandrayaan-3: India’s moon mission Chandrayaan-3 (Chandrayaan-3) is currently in sleep mode. Due to darkness on the moon, it has been put on sleep mode. Meanwhile, ISRO scientists are continuing their study on the data received from Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover. in the past days ISRO Had told that some mysterious tremors were felt on the moon. Which were initially called earthquake tremors, but now scientists have made new revelations on this.
This is why tremors were felt on the moon
Scientists say the Moon is not a cool place and the lunar surface regularly experiences “thermal moonquakes” due to extreme temperature variations, which cause vibrations. But, it cannot be called an earthquake. According to India Today report, this has been revealed in a research report published in the Journal of Geophysical Research.
The moon’s atmosphere goes through huge fluctuations
The moon’s atmosphere undergoes huge fluctuations to regulate its temperature, from 120 degrees Celsius during the day to -130 degrees Celsius at night, the report said. This causes the moon’s surface to expand and contract, creating slight vibrations. These vibrations are observed as thermal moonquakes.
Study conducted on the camp of Apollo 17 moon mission
According to the report, the data for this study was obtained from the seismometer placed on the Moon by the Apollo 17 mission in the 1970s. The data, which was left largely untouched, was reanalyzed using modern techniques such as machine learning. The study found that thermal moonquakes occur with remarkable regularity every afternoon as the Sun leaves its zenith position in the sky and the lunar surface begins to cool. However, the study also revealed additional seismic activity in the morning, which was distinct from the evening seismic activity.
