This causes the moon’s surface to expand and contract, creating slight vibrations. These vibrations are observed as thermal moonquakes.
Study conducted on the camp of Apollo 17 moon mission
According to the report, the data for this study was obtained from the seismometer placed on the Moon by the Apollo 17 mission in the 1970s. The data, which was left largely untouched, was reanalyzed using modern techniques such as machine learning. The study found that thermal moonquakes occur with remarkable regularity every afternoon as the Sun leaves its zenith position in the sky and the lunar surface begins to cool. However, the study also revealed additional seismic activity in the morning, which was distinct from the evening seismic activity.
