The results of by-elections for 7 assembly seats in 6 states have started coming. Voting on these seats took place on 5 September. These include Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Dhupguri in Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, Puthuppally in Kerala and Dhanpur and Boxanagar seats in Tripura.
According to the Election Commission website, BJP has won Dhanpur and Boxanagar seats of Tripura. Apart from this, BJP is leading in one seat each in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand. Samajwadi Party is leading in Ghosi seat of Uttar Pradesh, TMC in Bengal and Congress in Kerala.
INDIA alliance is contesting together on 5 of these 7 assembly seats – Ghosi (UP), Bageshwar (Uttarakhand), Dumri (Jharkhand), Boxanagar and Dhanpur (Tripura). The parties of INDIA alliance are in the fray against each other in Dhupguri seat of Bengal and Puthupalli seat of Kerala.

1. Ghosi seat of UP: Here there is a direct contest between INDIA alliance and BJP. Sudhakar Singh of the Samajwadi Party (SP) is in the fray from the INDIA alliance. On the other hand, Dara Singh Chauhan is contesting from BJP. Chauhan has come to BJP from SP. At present, SP’s Sudhakar is leading from BJP’s Dara Singh by more than 7 thousand votes.
2. Dumri seat of Jharkhand: Baby Devi of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) from INDIA alliance and AJSU candidate Yashoda Devi from NDA are in fray on Dumri seat. At present AJSU candidate Yashoda Devi is leading by 2469 votes.
3. Bageshwar seat of Uttarakhand: From Bageshwar seat of Uttarakhand, BJP’s Parvati Das is leading over Congress’s Basant Kumar by about 2000 votes. After the death of MLA Chandan Ram Das, BJP has made his wife Parvati Das its candidate on this seat.
4. Boxanagar and Dhanpur seats of Tripura: BJP candidate Bindu Debnath has defeated CPI (M) candidate Kaushik Chanda by 18871 votes from Dhanpur seat of Tripura. From Boxnagar seat, BJP’s Tafazzal Hussain defeated CPI(M)’s Mizan Hussain by a margin of 30237 votes.
5. Puthuppally seat of Kerala: From here Chandy Oman of INC is leading over Jack C Thomas of CPI(M) by more than 11 thousand votes. The Puthupalli seat fell vacant after the death of Congress leader and former chief minister Oommen Chandy. Here the Congress has fielded Oommen Chandy’s son. BJP has made senior leader Lijin Lal a candidate.
6. Dhupguri seat of West Bengal: The Dhupguri seat is witnessing a close fight between Trinamool Congress’s Nirmal Chandra Roy and BJP’s Taapsee Roy. BJP was ahead in the initial trends. However, after 12 noon TMC is leading by 100 votes. Congress and TMC, members of the INDIA Alliance, are contesting against each other on this seat. Congress has supported CPI(M) candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy.
