Communist leader and former JNU student union president Kanhaiya Kumar will join the Congress on October 2, according to sources, independent MLA from Gujarat Jignesh Mevani will also join the party on that day, earlier it was reported that Kanhaiya on September 28 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Will join the party but now it has been taken forward. Let us tell you that the discussion of Kanhaiya going to Congress intensified when he vacated his office in the CPI headquarters.
Kanhaiya Kumar has also met twice with Rahul Gandhi in the past regarding all this. Prashant Kishor was present during both the meeting. State spokesperson of Bihar Congress Asit Nath Tiwari is not speaking openly, but he is definitely saying that on October 2, all Gandhians are welcome in the Congress.
So now it can be guessed that Kanhaiya’s support can strengthen the weakening Congress in Bihar. In fact, the Congress did not get any significant success in the last 5 assembly elections. In the February 2005 assembly elections, the Congress got 10 seats, which was reduced to 9 in October 2005. In the 2010 assembly elections, the Congress had to be satisfied with only 4 seats. In the 2015 assembly elections, when the Congress became a part of the Grand Alliance in the assembly elections along with RJD and JDU, the party won 27 seats. Even after being in the Grand Alliance in the 2020 assembly elections, the Congress could win only 19 seats. At the same time, in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Congress got one seat in Bihar. Seeing its old result, Congress now wants to bring Kanhaiya as a new leader in Bihar.
Earlier, Kanhaiya had also met Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This year also I have met CM Nitish Kumar. Then there was speculation that Kanhaiya would join JDU, but Kanhaiya’s entry in JDU is difficult while staying with BJP.
The news of the expected joining of Jignesh Mevani and Kanhaiya Kumar reflects the Congress’s thrust to recruit young and dynamic faces ahead of the state elections in 2022 and the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
