The dates for the Punjab assembly elections have been announced, but after this, once a political party is demanding from the Election Commission to postpone the Punjab elections to be held on 16 February. Earlier Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had made this demand from the Election Commission and now the BJP itself is demanding the Election Commission to postpone the Punjab elections to be held on 16 February in view of Guru Ravidas Jayanti.
BJP state general secretary Subhash Sharma has said in a letter to the Election Commission that elections are to be held in Punjab on February 14. Whereas February 16 is Ravidas Jayanti. The number of followers of Guru Ravidas has increased significantly in Punjab. It also includes the Scheduled Caste people of the state, who constitute 32 per cent of the population.
He has said that lakhs of devotees will visit Varanasi, his residence, to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas. Because of which he will not be able to cast his vote. Therefore the election should be postponed.
Just a day before the BJP’s demand, CM Channi had written a letter to the Election Commission saying that on the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas, a large number of devotees of the state would go to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Due to which he would not be able to cast his vote. Hence the date of election will be extended by 1 week. In a letter to the Election Commission, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had said that 20 pilgrims are likely to visit Varanasi between February 10 and February 16. When devotees go to Varanasi, they will not be able to vote in Punjab, which will affect the vote percentage.
On the other hand, Punjab Lok Congress has supported the demand to postpone the elections in Punjab for one week in view of Guru Ravidas Jayanti on 16 February.
