After independence in Haryana’s Karnal district, girls have now been able to go to college. Devipur village of Karnal district is situated just 100 km away from Delhi. Till now the people here did not allow girls to take admission in the college after studying in the village school.
Naina is adamant on studies
Everyone is saluting the courage of Naina, daughter of Devipur Gram Panchayat, and why not? Naina showed amazing courage. Due to which today the daughters of Devipur village are able to understand the importance of going to college after school. According to the BBC Hindi report, when Naina’s father said that no, do not go anywhere for studies. So Naina’s answer to the desire to study in her mind was – why should not I go? She told her father that if she goes, she will definitely let me go. If I am found doing something wrong, then you cut my naad (neck)’
The family put the screws, yet the yearning is such that…
After schooling in Devipur village, girls were not allowed to study in college outside here. Because the people of this place had a belief that if a girl left for college from the village, it means more freedom. Which was not acceptable to the villagers in any case. Naina thought that if she did this, not only her ten sisters would be benefited in future, but all the girls living in the panchayat would be able to stand on their feet after being educated. Fourteen other girls of the village also participated in this act of courage along with Naina and did something which is being considered as an example for the village.
There was no public transport, the bridge became an obstacle in progress
Karnal’s village Devipur did not have any public transport connectivity. Due to which the people here had to travel on foot if they had to go out. There is a bridge on the way out of the village to the college. This was the obstacle in the way of girls going to college, from which every family in the village wanted to avoid or rather it was an obstacle in the way of progress. People believed that buses do not ply in the village, so we will not send girls to college. Because stray boys used to sit on the bridge. Who will molest the girls. However, it was a reality that apparently girls would have to walk four kilometers if they wanted to go to college.
that one letter that worked
After seeing Naina’s determination to go to college, other girls in the village also became passionate about studies. After which all the girls together decided that if somehow the bus leaves the village once, then the difficulty of our commuting will be easier. After which all the girls along with Naina called a meeting among the villagers. In which the girls put forth their stand in front of the villagers that this is the problem with you people and not just go away. Together we solve it. Then what was it that these girls together wrote a letter to Karnal’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Jasbir Kaur in May 2022. The girls asked Jasbir Kaur for help in plying a bus in the village, telling the full details of their problem. Social organization Breakthrough played a big role in connecting the girls and the Chief Judicial Magistrate. After which Jasbir Kaur ordered the bus to run the next day itself.
Jyoti supported the girls even after facing opposition
Jyoti’s struggle in the matter of girls of Devipur village going to college cannot be ignored at all. Because it was Jyoti who worked to reach the voice of Naina and other girls to Chief Judicial Magistrate Magistrate Jasbir Kaur. Jyoti comes from the Dalit community. Who is a resident of Garhi Khajur village of Karnal district. To take the girl child forward, Jyoti tied up with NGO Varitra Foundation and started a learning center in the ‘Harijan Chaupal’ of the village. For which also he had to face a lot of opposition.
there is more fight
The fight of the girls of Devipur village will not be completed just by the plying of the bus. Karnal’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Jasbir Kaur shared her experience in this whole matter. He said that I talked to the villagers. In which it was felt that there is still a need for further improvement in the thinking of the people there. That’s why our efforts will continue even further. The elders of Devipur believe that their girls should reach home before dark. Actually there is only one bus to return to the village. Whose timing is till 6 pm. In order to reach home early, the girls have to skip some classes every day. Sarpanch of Devipur Panchayat Krishna Kumar said that we want the girls of the village to study more. He said that we have tried to talk to the administration regarding the problem of timing of the bus, but till now no solution has been found.
