There are about 47 percent OBC people in Chhattisgarh. There are more than 95 castes in this class. 32 percent of the population belongs to the Scheduled Tribes and about 13 percent of the population belongs to the Scheduled Castes. Backward class voters are also considered as the vote bank of BJP and Congress in different areas. But in the 2018 assembly elections, the BJP suffered a major setback as the OBC voters shifted towards the Congress. Chhattisgarh has a total of 90 assembly seats. Of these, 39 seats are reserved. Out of these seats, 29 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 10 seats for Scheduled Castes. The remaining 51 seats after the reserved seats are general. But out of these seats also, voters belonging to OBC, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have a significant influence on about a dozen assembly seats.
